Maya V. Groff

June 25, 1930 ~ July 11, 2019 (age 89)

It is with great sadness, we announce that Maya Verena Groff passed away on July 11, 2019.  Maya is survived by her beloved husband Clifford Groff, who she adored and cherished. Loving Mother of Mark Groff (Janine) and Douglas Groff (Irina Mistrik).

Those also left to cherish her memory include her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family: Tim (Gina), Hilary (Kevin), Kevin, Brian, Kirsten, Jeffrey and Melanie. Lilianna, Layla, Lydia, Andrej Mistrik, Katarina Mistrik.

Born in Zurich Switzerland, Maya came to the United States in the early 1950’s.  Meeting her future husband, Cliff, while working as a Hostess for TWA.  They had a great life together living in Alaska, Germany, Maryland and New York.  Recently celebrating 66 glorious years together.

Maya always had a lot of energy and was passionate about whatever she did. She loved gardening, always grew and maintained a large flower garden. She especially loved her oleanders and the yellow finches that fed from her bird feeder.

She was known for her signature Swiss Christmas Cookies. Everyone was anxious to receive their personal batch from Maya.

Maya enjoyed passing down Swiss traditions to her family; making raclette, cheese fondue, teaching the kids how to sew, play games, and lighting real candles for her Advent wreath. She will be sweetly remembered for ringing in each New Year with her Swiss cowbell, playing her favorite Easter egg game and of course her infamous Swiss cookies.

Maya was an active tennis player when she was younger, and continued to follow the game.  More recently she enjoyed kayaking, swimming, and going to the beach with her grandchildren when they visited. She enjoyed music, especially when Cliff or her grandkids played. Maya actively participated on community committees, most recently for the community magazine.

Prior to being an active Mom and running the family, Maya was a Governess in England and California.  She also studied Fashion Design in California. After graduation, Maya worked as a designer for children’s clothing. She then took a position with TWA as a Stewardess, based in New York.  Later on, she was the Office Manager for an Orthodontist, and lastly, worked as a Real Estate Agent while living in Maryland.

Maya loved her life, and thoroughly enjoyed living by the water with the love of her life, Cliff.

She has touched so many lives and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting her. Most of all, she will be missed by her entire family; sons, daughter-in-law’s, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and friends.  She brought much joy, laughter and fond memories to our lives.

On August 1, 2019, there will be a graveside service for Maya at Pinelawn Memorial Park at 11:00 AM.
